How to pick out shampoo and conditioning products
This is oddly a most asked question. So how does one pick a product? I think most of us have an area of bottles of products under our sinks that promised wonders and did not deliver.
Does this mean they are bad? Or were we lied to? Likely, not. One must understand that (and disclosure here, I am only speaking about professional products) each product has a specific use for specific hair types and or styles.
An example is if the style is extreme, say like a Mohawk style. The product for that would be very specific because it needs to be really strong. And at the same time to wash such hair one would have to take into account the amount of product used to make this happen in order to have clean hair and scalp once again.
So it goes with hair, styles, one’s own personal skin and hair journey. When we are young we typically have an abundance of oils. As time goes and hormones change so does our skin and hair. Thankfully there is more awareness of this recently.

So how to choose? Well you have to ask yourself a few questions!
- How often do you shampoo?
- What is your hair type, curly, straight, dry, fine, coarse, thick, thinner?
- Do you color and or do any treatments on your hair that would require special care?
- What is your own personal hair goal? i.e. Wash and wear hair? Highly styled?
- What is your hair regime? Do you only spend one minute washing and conditioning? Or are you willing and able to spend more time?
Once you have honestly answered these questions with yourself you can have a clear idea.
Most people these days are every two to three days. Guys with very short hair usually every day.
If you have curly hair but it’s fine, you will likely want some moisture but not too much as to weigh it down.
Strong curly hair needs the moisture to help control frizz.
Super straight hair can get away with a bit more and throw a dry shampoo in to control excess oil in between regular shampoos. Dry shampoo is only a stop gap, not meant for all the time.
I know this sounds like a lot of questions but once you sort this out, the amount of bottles you have will hopefully dwindle down.
I always tell my clients to use the shampoo they don’t want or need to wash sweaters or the car? So not to be wasteful. It can also be donated to women’s shelters.
If you have further questions feel free to stop by and ask. And/or book an appointment to get a service. That way you get my undivided attention.
Sincerely,
Diana
